Muslims in South Carolina: Dated March 3, 1753:
Muslims from North Africa, appear in the records of South Carolina. In the South Carolina Council Journal, dated March 3, 1753–No. 21, Pt. 1, pp. 298-299. Two men by the name Abel Conder and Mahamut (Mahomet) petitioned the South Carolina royal authorities in Arabic for their freedom. ALMOST 260 YEARS AGO!!!
Today in Low Country:
The Central Mosque of Charleston, situated at 1082 King Street, in downtown Charleston, is a house of worship of God for people with ethnic backgrounds of about thirty different nationalities, including blacks, whites, arabs and non-arabs. It is open to every muslim and non-muslim regardless of race, language or ethnicity.
Prayers (SALAH) / Worship Services:
The Mosque is open for the five daily prayers. The weekly religious service, “The Jumuah Prayer”, is held at 1:30 pm on Fridays year round. The CMC also provides wedding and funeral services to Muslims.
